A short set of pro tips for keeping a work phone, and the rest of your life, harder to connect.
A phone for work only
Use a dedicated prepaid phone for work. Buy it with cash when you can, and keep it away from personal accounts, personal contacts, and your regular cloud or photo backups.
Register it on its own
Do not register the work phone or its number with your real name, home address, or personal email. A separate work email is enough.
Share a work number
A second line or a VoIP app is safer than handing out your personal number. Keep the personal number out of ads, screening, and client conversations.
Quiet the location clues
Turn off location sharing, photo geotags, and contact syncing on the work phone. Strip photo metadata before you post, and watch for reflections or backgrounds that show where you are.
Keep networks separate
Leave the work phone off your home Wi-Fi, and give it its own app accounts. Do not sign in to personal social accounts on it.
Lock the screen
Use a strong passcode that you do not reuse, turn off lock-screen previews, and keep the software updated.
Search for yourself
Look up what appears for your ad photos, your handle, and your phone number. Run a reverse-image search on pictures you have posted.
If something is exposed
Decide the next steps before you need them: replace the number, tell the people you trust, and write down what happened.
